The Stat Line Of The Night — 5/31/11

In 11 MLB seasons, Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano has a .240 average at the plate.  In 641 at bats, he has struck out a total of 226 times, which equals over one-third of his at bats.  Therefore, you would think that the 30-year-old from Venezuela would be used to striking out these days, but that didn’t appear to be the case last night during a game against the Houston Astros.

With a runner in scoring position, Zambrano whiffed on strike three, ending the inning and causing him to take his frustrations out on the bat.

At first, it appeared as though the bat would survive Zambrano’s wrath, but as every Gatorade cooler knows, Zambrano’s wrath is never complete after only one blow.

In case you were wondering, the Astros scored 6 runs in the ninth inning, en route to the 7-3 come-from-behind victory.  Here is a look at Zambrano’s bat-breaking blowup.
